Tired of getting unwanted marketing calls on your cell phone? On a daily basis cell phone users are known to get an assortment of calls from telemarketers. What is worse is that many of these calls are also scams.  Whether they are legitimate or not they can be an annoying pain. Since people don’t use landlines as often due to relying on cell phones, telemarketers are gaining ground by accessing wireless numbers. Here are a few tips to help in stopping telemarketing calls to your cell phone.

• File a complaint with FCC and with your state attorney general. If you receive calls from the same telemarketers you can report the activity. Many states in the country have reported hundreds of complaints from consumers regarding telemarketers. It can help in determining whether a company’s practices is legitimate and help authorities take further action necessary. You can go online or contact the FCC or your state attorney general by phone. It helps to have the phone number in which the calls are generating from and how often they are made to your phone.
• Mention to the company you want to be added to their do not call list. It may take a few days for your information to get into the system. Over the next couple of weeks you should see a decrease in calls. This is not the same as the national registry, and if the company adds your name to their do not call list, this does not get forwarded to the national list. Record the date when you requested to be added to their do not call list to follow activity of further calls until they stop.
• Register your cell phone on the national do not call list registry. The national do not call list registry includes the option of adding multiple phone numbers. People often add their landline number to the list, but if they don’t use a landline anymore they can add their mobile number. The national registry says it may take a few weeks before your number gets through the system. You should see a decrease in marketing calls during this time.
• Know that certain companies and organizations can still call you even if you are on the “do not call” list. They include those related to fundraising such as political organizations and non-profits. These types of companies can still call your phone, but you can mention to them to add your number to their do not call list.  Such companies keep record of which numbers to avoid.
• Companies you have done business with may contact you for up to 6 months. If you made any major purchases or opened an account, it is possible the company you did business with can call you for marketing purposes. There are guidelines that state they can do this for roughly six months from the time of the business transaction. You can ask about being added to their do not call list if necessary.

Some telemarketing calls are from legitimate companies trying to sell a product or a service. Look for red flags when callers ask for personal information or offer something that sounds to good to be true. It could be a scam.
